Stability means maintaining the target temperature within ±0.5°C throughout the day and night cycle. In a room where ambient temperature swings 5–8°C between day and night — common in tropical countries with air conditioning running at night — an undersized or malfunctioning heater cannot compensate, and temperature oscillations exceed ±1°C. This chronic instability suppresses immune function and is the primary reason fish in otherwise well-maintained tanks develop chronic disease outbreaks.
