Foreground Stone Layout: Creating Iwagumi-Style Front

Foreground stones anchor your aquascape's front edge. Placement follows Japanese aesthetic principles.

By 4848 One FarmPublished April 21, 2026

Size Hierarchy

One large stone + 2-3 medium + several small = balanced composition.

Odd numbers preferred (3, 5, 7) — avoid even counts.

Placement Rule

Largest stone on golden ratio point (1/3 from left or right).

Medium stones support main stone. Small stones provide visual flow.

Pattern Flow

Stones should lead the eye inward — from front edge toward back.

Avoid perfectly aligned stones — off-center and irregular is natural.

Integration with Plants

Place carpet plants AROUND stones, not over them. Stones should be visible.

Small moss tufts on stones add natural texture.
