Aquarium Electrical Safety: GFCI and Drip Loops

Aquariums and electricity coexist precariously. One stray current shocks fish and humans alike. Safety first.

GFCI Outlets

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter outlets cut power within milliseconds of fault detection.

Mandatory for any aquarium electrical setup. $20 install or replacement.

Drip Loops

Cords should hang in U-shape below outlet. Water drips down cord stop at the loop, not into outlet.

Pure physics — water cannot flow uphill against gravity into outlet.

Unplug Before Touch

Always unplug heaters, pumps, lights before reaching into water. Period.

Even GFCI is not 100%. Habit beats reliance on devices.

Stray Voltage Detection

Multimeter check: probe water with one lead, ground with other. Reading above 1V = stray voltage.

Source: faulty heater, pump, or light. Replace immediately.

  • Replace heaters every 3-4 years preventively
  • Power strips with switches let you cut multiple devices fast
  • Surge protector for tanks in storm-prone areas
