The Nitrogen Cycle — How to Cycle a New Tank

The single most important concept in the hobby. Master the nitrogen cycle and you prevent the invisible ammonia poisoning that kills most beginners' first fish.

What Is the Nitrogen Cycle?

Every aquarium is a tiny closed ecosystem. Fish constantly produce ammonia through their gills and waste, and in a sealed glass box that ammonia has nowhere to go. The nitrogen cycle is the natural process by which colonies of beneficial bacteria convert that toxic ammonia into progressively safer compounds. Establishing those bacteria before you add fish is called "cycling the tank."

The whole process moves through three chemical stages: ammonia → nitrite → nitrate. Once both ammonia and nitrite consistently read zero and nitrate is present, your biological filter is mature and the tank is safe for livestock.

The Three Stages

Stage 1 — Ammonia (NH₃)

Fish waste, uneaten food and decaying plants release ammonia, which is highly toxic even at low levels. In a new tank ammonia climbs first. Your goal is to grow bacteria that eat it before it harms livestock.

Stage 2 — Nitrite (NO₂)

Bacteria (Nitrosomonas) convert ammonia into nitrite — still very toxic, as it starves fish of oxygen by binding to their blood. When ammonia drops and nitrite rises, your cycle is progressing.

Stage 3 — Nitrate (NO₃)

A second bacteria group (Nitrobacter/Nitrospira) converts nitrite into nitrate, which is far less toxic. Nitrate is removed by regular water changes and live plants. When ammonia and nitrite both read zero and nitrate appears, the tank is cycled.

Set Up the Tank Fully

Install filter, heater, substrate and décor and fill with dechlorinated water. Run everything as if fish were present. The filter media is where most beneficial bacteria will colonise.

Add an Ammonia Source

For a fishless cycle, dose pure ammonia to about 2–4 ppm, or add a small pinch of fish food to rot. This feeds the bacteria you are trying to grow — never add fish yet.

Test Every 2–3 Days

Use a liquid test kit for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. Track the numbers. You will see ammonia rise then fall, nitrite rise then fall, and nitrate steadily climb.

Seed With Bacteria (Optional)

Add filter media, a sponge or gravel from an established healthy tank, or a quality bottled bacteria starter. This can cut cycling time roughly in half.

Wait for the Zero-Zero Reading

The tank is cycled when a full dose of ammonia is converted to zero ammonia and zero nitrite within 24 hours, with nitrate present. This typically takes 3–6 weeks.

Water Change, Then Stock Slowly

Do a large water change to lower nitrate, then add just a few hardy fish. Add more livestock gradually over the following weeks so the bacteria colony can keep pace.

How long does it take to cycle an aquarium?

A fishless cycle usually takes 3–6 weeks. Seeding the tank with media from an established aquarium or a quality bottled bacteria product can shorten this to 1–2 weeks. Warmth, oxygen and a stable pH all speed the process; cold, acidic or low-oxygen water slows it.

What is "new tank syndrome"?

New tank syndrome is the sudden loss of fish added to an uncycled aquarium. With no established bacteria, ammonia and nitrite spike to toxic levels within days, poisoning the fish. Cycling the tank before adding livestock prevents it entirely.

Can I cycle a tank with fish in it?

A fish-in cycle is possible but stressful and risky for the fish. If you must, use only a few very hardy fish, feed sparingly, and do frequent partial water changes to keep ammonia and nitrite low. A fishless cycle is safer and kinder.

Do I still need water changes after cycling?

Yes. The cycle removes ammonia and nitrite but nitrate keeps accumulating and must be exported by regular partial water changes (commonly 20–30% weekly) and, optionally, live plants. Cycling is the start of good water care, not the end.

Why did my cycle stall?

Common causes are a pH that dropped too low, chlorinated water killing the bacteria, water that is too cold, or too little oxygen. Check and correct these factors, keep dosing the ammonia source, and be patient — restarting bacterial growth takes a few days.
